The Spanish Flag (flag of Spain) is defined in the Spanish Constitution of 1978 to be divided into three horizontal stripes consisting of red, yellow and red. The yellow stripe is to be twice as wide as the red stripes and state, war and ensign flags are charged with the Spanish Coat of Arms, civil flags may optionally have the Coat of Arms. The coat of arms is to be placed at 1/3 the flag's length nearest the hoist and should be 2/5 the flags width high. The current coat of arms was adopted in December 19, 1981, replacing the model of 1977. The origin of the current flag of Spain is from the Naval Ensign of 1785, "Pabellon de la Marina de Guerra" under Charles III of Spain.
